Tip 4: Carefully Track Your Spending

Most people are aware that they need to create a budget if they are going to be financially successful. The problem is that a lot of people create a budget and then don't follow it. A big part of the reason for this is that the budget that they created was completely unrealistic. That's why it's important we have a good knowledge about "effective budgeting". Unfortunately most people grossly underestimate how much they really spend. They are pretty good when it comes to the big ticket items, the mortgage the car payments, keeping track of those is pretty easy. The problem is that small day to day stuff. You can easily spend a couple of hundred dollars a month on coffee if you are drinking a couple every day. Most people fail to include these expenses in their budget.

If you are going to create a realistic budget you are going to have to get an accurate accounting of what you spend. The first step will be the big ticket items, add up the things like the mortgage payment the car payment and all the other bills. One area that you are going to want to be careful with is the credit cards. You need to make sure that you factor in the interest. Most people account for it by simply adding up the total of what they buy with their credit card. However if you are carrying a balance the interest is going to be a large expense that needs to be factored in. It will probably serve as an incentive to stop using your credit cards when you find out how much this really is.

The other thing that a lot of people fail to consider when they are creating a budget is that bills that don't get paid monthly. Things like insurance are normally paid once a year or in some cases quarterly. These are expenses that you are going to have to include in your monthly budget. If it is a bill that is paid once a year divide it by twelve and add that amount to your monthly expenses. Again these are things that really add up if you forget to include them in your planning.

The last step is to figure out all of those day to day expenses. In order to do this you are going to want to spend a month recording everything that you spend. You should carry a notepad around with you so that you can keep track of it all. Every time that you stop for coffee or ride the bus make sure that you write it down. At the end of the month you can add it all up and see how much you are spending, it will probably come as a shock. The good news is that these day to day expenses are the easiest ones to cut back on so once you know what they are you should be able to come up with a budget that you can stick to and allow you to reach your financial goals.
